Pajaro Valley Community Meetings
WCCC members share the objective of reaching out to the indigenous community. The Oaxacan community constitutes a growing segment of the immigrant and migrant agricultural community and, due to its cultural, linguistic and literacy differences, is one of the most vulnerable and difficult to reach communities.
In the past couple of years WCCC has spent considerable time focusing on increasing awareness of translation/outreach services for indigenous Oaxacan clients which led to the creation of the Pajaro Valley Community Meetings.
Each Pajaro Valley Community Meeting has two service organizations present in Spanish to the community with translation into Mixteco. There is time for questions and answers as well. These meetings are held the 4th Friday of every month at Pajaro Middle School. Through these Community Meetings we hope to increase the awareness of necessary services to the Oaxacan Community in a culturally sensitive manner.
The Oaxacan Action Group is always looking for more organizations to present to this community. If your service organization is interested please contact Patrick Fodell at patrickf@watsonvillelawcenter.org.
Education for Service Providers
The WCCC has also co-sponsored two training opportunities for service providers to gain a better understanding of cultural practices of indigenous groups and resources to aid in communication. These presentations can be found in the resource page on the WCCC website.
