SCCCU has 25 Assets For Independence (AFI) Individual Development Accounts IDA account holders and there are still openings!

If you are eligible, apply now.

Eligibility includes low income, low assets and a drive to capitalize your small business.

· Low income means earning under 200% of the federal poverty level. This year, for example, that is $44,100 for a family of four (more income with larger families, smaller income for fewer people).

· Low asset means less than $10,000. A car and a house won’t not counted in the limit.

Households can save up to $4,000 from earned income over the course of two years and have it matched with another $4,000! Individuals can save up to $2,000 and have it matched with $2,000. The savings and the match can be used within the next year or so to capitalize your small business. So far, he AFI IDA account holders have saved $14,659 to date, not counting interest.

Account holders participate in financial education, and also create a written business plan for using the IDA funds to start up or strengthen their small business.

SCCCU is partnering with ten agencies: The Community Action Board; Cabrillo College; El Pajaro Community Development Corporation; Homeless Services Center; Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center; Second Harvest Food Bank; Small Business Development Center; United Way; Walnut Avenue Women’s Center; and the Watsonville Law Center.

Notice from the Courts: Court Closure Dates

COUNTY OF SANTA CRUZ

COURT CLOSURE DATES

Due to budget reductions, statewide court closures for all courts in California including the Superior Courts, Appellate Courts, Supreme Court and the Administrative office of the Courts will occur on the third Wednesday of each month. The Court Closures will begin on September 16 and continue to June 16, 2010. The legislation that permits the court closures treats these days as court holidays for the purpose of computing time in all case types.

Language Access to Court – Self Help Center (LAC)

Language Access to Court – Self Help Center (LAC)

The Language Access to the Court Project is a joint project between the Watsonville Law Center and the Santa Cruz County Superior Court, provided through the Court’s Self Help Center. LAC provides Spanish-speaking self-litigants language access to the courts through the provision of in-language legal information and assistance with court forms and pleadings at the Court’s Self-Help Center. LAC does NOT provide legal representation, and may assist multiple parties in obtaining access to forms and information. LAC’s representative will assist on a drop in basis at the following locations:

Watsonville: Monday and Thursdays, 8:30-11:30 and 1:30-4
The Self Help Center in the New Courthouse,
1 Second Street, Rm. 301, Watsonville
Santa Cruz: Tuesdays, 8:30-11:30 and 1:30-4, inside the Courthouse

Acceso de Idioma a la Corte – Centro de Ayuda (LAC)

El Proyecto de Acceso de Idioma a la Corte es un proyecto colectivo entre El Centro Legal de Watsonville y la Corte Superior del Condado de Santa Cruz proveído por medio del Centro de Ayuda de la Corte. LAC provee a auto litigantes hispanohablantes acceso de idioma a las cortes mediante la prestación de servicio en su propio idioma información legal y asistencia con las formas y los escritos judiciales en el Centro de Ayuda de la Corte. LAC NO provee representación legal, y podrá ayudar a múltiples partes en la obtención de acceso a los formularios y la información. El/la representante de LAC asistirá sin previa sita en las siguientes locaciones:

Watsonville: lunes y jueves, 8:30-11:30 y 1:30-4
El Centro de Ayuda en la nueva Corte,
